Get to know a true wine pioneer of this relatively new region and be inspired by their very own New Zealand wine story!
Who started Mt. Beautiful and when?
World-renowned scholar/entrepreneur and New Zealand native David Teece, together with his wife Leigh, spent two years searching for just this spot, where they could pioneer an undiscovered region and fulfil their dream of bringing the best of New Zealand to the world.
Mt. Beautiful is the first vineyard of a commercial size to be planted outside of an established New Zealand region in 20 years. Having established the vineyard in 2003–2005, Mt. Beautiful began making wine in tiny quantities in 2007. Since then the wine volume has steadily increased as the vineyard has matured. The new winery was built for the 2015 vintage and represents the next step in Mt. Beautiful’s evolution.

What makes Mt. Beautiful special?
There are very few other wineries in Canterbury. In general, compared to most New Zealand wines, ours tend to be more balanced and boast more tropical notes due to the longer and cooler climate. We also age our wines longer on the lees which softens them.
Jake is a four year old Border Collie who was adopted by our Vineyard Manager Fin when he was six months old. Jake’s original family moved to Australia after the Christchurch earthquake destroyed their home. He loves rounding up cars, vehicles, quad bikes or anything else with wheels at the vineyard.
Funniest customer tasting story?
We had a request to do a tasting at a retirement village in Christchurch, since the residents couldn’t travel to Cheviot. Despite what you might suspect, the residents ended up being the noisiest and most boisterous group we’ve ever done a tasting for. At one point, we thought they might start dancing on tables!
Top 3 things to do in North Canterbury
There are numerous activities one can enjoy while visiting Cheviot, however these are our top three:
- Visit Gore Bay, a secluded beach town with camp grounds, playgrounds and holiday houses located 8km East of the Cheviot township. The beach is family friendly and also has some of the best surf conditions on the South Island.
- Dine next door to the Mt. Beautiful Tasting Room at Two Rivers Café, featuring quality food and a lovely garden to sit in while you taste Mt. Beautiful wines.
- And lastly, if you are into fishing, the Waiau and Hurunui Rivers both offer excellent trout, salmon and whitebait fishing. For additional visitor information on the Cheviot area, visit their website.
