Mmmm… it’s National Moscato Day today and, why not, let’s give it a go.
A relative newcomer to the scene, this holiday dedicated to the light Moscato grape that originates from the Piedmont region in Northern Italy was initiated in 2012 by the powerful Gallo family in the United States. Just as a throwback in time, here is an article from Stuff talking about this popular wine style and its rise to fame with a pre Kim Kanye!
This variety has taken the US and Australian markets by storm, however, it has been a bit late to take a hold here in New Zealand. It could be that the sweet, light, and often slightly fizzy wine is just too sweet for the kiwi palate. Used to our signature Sauvignon Blanc that is fresh, crisp and has a very healthy dose of acidity, Moscato can come across as a beauty queen trying a bit too hard.
So if you are on the hunt for “Mr Right” now that Art Green has professed his love for Matilda on the BachelorNZ, here are a couple of other options.
Fresh and bubbly and low alcohol so won’t hurt your head, this sounds like a promising date.
