Successful and witty full-time wine-preneur Yvonne Lorkin certainly keeps busy! We caught up with her to find our more about her wine passion and background.

Hi Yvonne, thanks a lot for your time today.

What do you do?
Entrepreneur, Writer, Mother, Wife. Champion of good humans and creative minds. Payer of bills. Feeder of pets. Folder of fitted sheets & picker-upper of socks & wet towels.

Number of years in the wine industry
18.

First job
I was 12. My first job was at a busy Fruit & Veg stall on the Havelock North Road called ‘In The Oaks’. I was paid $2 an hour to bag carrots, tomatoes and spuds, trim cabbages, serve customers, unload pallets, the whole deal. It was hardcore!

If you were a wine, what wine would you be?
Much as I’d like to say something “lean and elegant”, I’m more like a viognier. Complex, weighty and goes REALLY well with food.

What would you do if you weren’t a wine columnist?
I always wanted to be an emergency surgeon.

Wine & dine, what’s your favourite match?
It’s such a cliché but sipping beautifully made champagne or methode with plump, juicy, natural oysters is how I want to end my days.

New Zealand wine is …
… SO much better than we give it credit for. Our wines are world-class. Our wines are unique.  Our wines are simply stunning and the stories behind them are fascinating.

I’m saving a bottle of …
… 1986 Muller Thurgau for someone I really don’t like.

Dead or alive, who would you like to share a glass of vino with?
Amy Schumer, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Tig Nataro and Sarah Silverman down at the local sports bar. As my teenagers would say “It’d be crack up”. Although I’d be too scared to leave the group to go to the bathroom because of what they’d probably say about me behind my back…

Thanks Yvonne!
