Jana’s delicious recipes and snippets of her family keep popping-up in my feed and with a background in wine and a food and lifestyle blog to her name, I felt it was time to reach out to her.
So let’s find out more about this blogger and busy mama Jana in today’s Q&A:
Hi Jana, thanks a lot for your time. Please tell us a bit about yourself
I live in lovely Arrowtown with my family and run a food & lifestyle blog called The MacPherson Diaries. My job has many facets but I spend most of my time working with brands to showcase their products. I write recipes, take photos, and share gems about living in such a stunning part of the world.
When and why did you start your blog?
I had my children 18 months apart and when my youngest, River, was born, we were putting the wheels in motion to sell our restaurant. I was working on behind the scenes admin for our business and needed something to replace this work.
Before children I worked as an on premise account manager for Peregrine Wines, but with two little ones I wanted something slightly different. So I started a blog!
It has changed focus over the years and evolved, but I have found a job that I really love, that has some flexibility around my now, not-so-young, children!
If you were a wine, what wine would you be?
I would be a Sparkling Rosé, Bubbly, always loves a party, not to serious and great with food!
Go-to food and wine match at the moment?
It is Winter here, the mountains are covered in pillows of white snow, so we are cooking for hearty meals like slow braised lamb shanks, and reaching for the Pinot Noir.
Top 3 things to do in Queenstown?
1. Walk – my energetic dog makes sure that I do this pretty regularly, but I also push the boat out and make the time to go for longer walks too. I try and get UP into the hills, above the noise, and marvel and this incredible place. The perspective you get from being above the basin is incredible. Its food for the soul!
2. Our family love a trip to the Remarkables market, and especially in Summer, have a coffee, let the kids go wild in the massive playground, and pick up some dumplings, vegetables and probably and ice cream for the kids, all while listening to live music and bumping into friends. Bliss.
3. Head to la Rhumbla in Arrowtown, always a good time, delicious food, and lively great service. It ticks all the boxes!
Share a fact about yourself that only a few know…
Hmmmm I am pretty open, and love a chat so there isn’t much people don’t know!
Things you still want to do – what’s on your bucket list?
TRAVEL! I didn’t travel nearly enough pre children so I am looking forward to doing some international travel one day in the distant future.
Dead or alive, who would you like to share a glass of vino with?
Jessie Ware and her mum Lennie, I listen to their podcast Table Manners, where they cook for celebs and chat about food and wine and have a good laugh. I would love to sit around with them over a glass of Rosé, and it would be even better if my mum could join us too.
